"Man Utd v Barca just to qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League is ridiculous.

That would be a worthy final."

It would be if it were betwee the great teams from those clubs histories, but it's not - it's a couple of groups of players who are playing for clubs that once had (very) glamorous pasts.

The current shirt-wearers are exactly where change has deemed them fit - not that MSM would ever allow anybody to think, let alone accept, accept such changes are even possible.

That depends on if you think us blowing it is seen as a failure, Kandu.

Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
So if at the start of last season I was to tell you that in a major European competition we would not only qualify from our group but reach the semi finals and on the way beat Lyon and Seville, who had practically owned the trophy for the few previous years, you would deem that as failure ?

We finished 7th last season. Think Spurs did the season before also when they qualified for the Conference League.

From what I can gather of the four extra spots in each competition from 2024/25, two of which will be granted to the countries whose teams have performed best in Europe the previous season.

Assuming England is one of those countries, does that not mean there would then be an extra place for Premier League clubs in each of the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League that season as a result? If so, does 7th not in theory become 10th for a qualifying spot in the ECL?

Not sure if this could be lowered even further with other (albeit unlikely) outcomes such as a team finishing outside the top 4 (or 5) but winning the CL or EL.

Yeah, its a sickener really, MancIron.

A few of Moyes's supporters claim our European run is a positive and use it as evidence to keep him on.

I agree with you. We blew it.

Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
Was looking at who is left in this year's Europa and it is chock full of big name teams this year.

Arsenal, Man U, Barca, Juve, Roma amongst others.

We really blew it last year.

Having said that there isn't a lot in the Europa Conference aside from Villareal and Lazio.

And I know we can't beat an egg at the moment but if we can get our shit together it could be our last realistic stab at a trophy for a few years.

With Rice probably leaving and Newcastle tooling up.

The argument that we have the best squad in the comp can be made.

But its irrelevant when we have a fucking loser managing that squad.

Manuel

You ask a fair question. We are certainly as good as those you mentioned. Whether we have the best squad is another question I suppose. But the way we're playing and set up means we'll lose to teams with inferior players to us as it stands.

Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
Completely agree with Fifth.

Desperate to see us win something and a European cup, all be it the third tier, would be unreal.

Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
I'm glad we're in this. It definitely has not been a destruction as Moyes has been mostly using the B team and did well to win the group. That will need to change though, Villarreal or Lazio will be difficult, but something I'll be looking forward to.
Staying in the Premier is more difficult and we really need a win today to get started on that. Lets hope things look very different end of Feb, when this gets going again.

''We have the best squad in the competition''

Is that true though, genuine question as I really don't know, should we have the beating of Villareal and Lazio all being even?

Roma winning it last year. Another team with huge fan base starved of success... if we won it then our fanbase would be over the moon and quite rightly.

FA Cup, Conference, League Cup - I don't care. I want us to win something in my life that I can remember, I was 4 when we last won the Cup.

We have the best squad in the competition. We won't win with this useless cunt managing us though.

Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
We can forget the FA Cup whilst Moyes is here. This is a very winnable trophy, as was the EL last season, and I should imagine the majority of fans would be fucking over the moon to win this.

Pagey 10:09 Tue Jan 3
Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
What would you do if we won it, out of interest? Would you even watch the final?

A trophy along with qualifying for the Europa League again, which has arguably given us some of our best moments in recent years.

It’s not the FA Cup, but we’re not among the favourites to win the FA Cup. We can’t afford to be snobby about any competition or trophy.

Full Claret Jacket 9:19 Tue Jan 3
Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
It's not the same prize as winning the FA Cup.

The FA Cup has some prestige still and is difficult to win - especially as the cash rich sides have deep squads and 5 subs to play with. The prize of winning the FA Cup is being a winner of one of the premier club competitions in the world.
Our 1980 cup winning squad is still recognised today as a legendary side - especially by those who remember them.

Europe Conference league is the Papa Johns trophy of Europe. Nobody really cares who wins it other than being another name in the hat for the Europa league.

Can't believe people aren't up for this.

No it isn't the champions league or Europe league, but fuck me it's a European competition. We've had precious little of these or any success in decades and people are moaning ita not glamorous enough.

Jeeeeez

Westside 8:44 Tue Jan 3
Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
Westside - I may be mistaken, but I'm sure from the season after next the European competitions are all expanding.

They are. In the Conference from 32, to 36 teams. Still don't see how 4 extra teams, across the whole competition, will have teams from 10th and 11th place, qualifying. .England would have to get all 4 extra spots, for the 11th place team in the premier league to qualify.

Having just looked up the "distribution," for 2024/25 Conference League there are only 5, 6th placed teams (from the like of England, Germany, Spain, Italy etc) and one 5th place team, from the lowest rankings group. So only a total of 6 teams, who will be lower than 4th. in all the leagues.

Discounts cup winners who qualify, who could of course finish anywhere in their leagues, as now.
